How to Refinish a Front Door – The Process This should take 2 to 6 hours depending on the number of doors and side lites. Upon arrival, the technicians will evaluate the door, discuss the options and finalize the price. If the door can be repaired, the door is removed from the door frame and set up in a temporary work booth on the driveway or yard. A heavy plastic sheet is used to completely seal up the door way in your house or work. The doorway will not be usable during the repair process. Through use of chemical stripping and/or sanding the door finish is removed down to the raw natural wood. Getting to raw wood is extremely important as raw wood will easily and uniformly accept the stain. Minor scratches, gouges, and in some cases missing molding will be replaced. All removed material is vacuumed up and put in the trash. The technicians will leave no trace of work when they complete the job. Stains are then applied then allowed to dry. Several coats of sealant are sprayed on the door. Drying time is required between each coat. We add several fast drying top coats of sealant.
